What to Wear for Fall Photos in NOVA

There’s just something about fall in Northern Virginia that feels extra special. The air feels perfect, the leaves start to change colors, and suddenly every park, field, and trail looks like a movie set from Gilmore Girls. It’s one of the most beautiful times for photos.
But the question I get asked often?
“What should I wear?”
And honestly, I love that question, because what you wear can totally change the mood of your photos. It’s not about being overly styled or perfectly matched; it’s about comfort, color, and feeling good in what you’re wearing.
Let’s break it down so you can show up feeling confident and ready for those candid moments,  whether it’s an engagement shoot, maternity session, cozy couple portraits, or even a solo session to celebrate yourself.

Start with a Color Palette

When it comes to fall photos, think coordinated, not matching. The goal isn’t to blend in or overthink,  it’s to look natural and connected to your surroundings.

Fall is full of rich, earthy tones that photograph beautifully. Shades like rust, olive, cream, tan, mustard, navy, and burgundy pop against the changing leaves without feeling too bold.

Try choosing one or two base colors and then layering in softer neutrals or accents.
Some ideas:

  • Cream + rust + olive
  • Tan + navy + mustard
  • Denim + taupe + burgundy

These tones look amazing together and fit perfectly with the cozy fall landscapes around Fairfax and Loudoun County.

Bring in Texture and Soft Layers

If there is one thing that makes fall photos feel extra cozy, it’s texture. Think knits, linen, corduroy, and denim.

Solid tones tend to photograph beautifully because they let your connection (and the gorgeous fall leaves) stand out. Earthy neutrals like cream, tan, rust, and olive always mix well together and look timeless on camera.

If you love the  cozy vibes try ribbed sweaters, waffle textures, flowy fabrics, or light layering. These details catch the light in all the best ways and bring your photos to life, no pattern required.

Layers Make Everything Better

One of my favorite parts about fall styling is layering, not just because it’s practical, but because it adds so much visual interest.

For couples or maternity sessions, try:

  • A flowy dress with a chunky cardigan or denim jacket
  • A neutral sweater with corduroy or jeans and boots
  • Layers like scarves, hats, or jackets that can easily be added or removed

For individual portraits or headshots, layering  can elevate your look without making it feel too formal and help you stand out in your photos!

If you’re bringing your pup (which I fully support 🤗🐾), a neutral bandana or simple leather collar fits perfectly into a fall palette.

Comfort Over Everything

Here’s the secret: the more comfortable you feel, the better your photos will look.

If you’re adjusting your outfit every few minutes or wearing something stiff, it’ll show in your posture and expression. The best photos happen when you can move, laugh, and just be YOURSELF.

Choose soft, breathable fabrics that let you move freely. Comfort always translates beautifully on camera.

Accessories That Complete the Look

If you’re planning to bring props,  like a blanket, mug of pumpkin coffee (yes, I am a pumpkin latte girl 😆), bouquet of dried florals, or a book for a cozy solo session, choose items that complement your tones.

A Few Quick Tips Before Your Session

  • Stick with tones that feel natural and timeless , they will never go out of style.
  • Keep shoes simple and seasonally appropriate (boots always win in fall!).
  • Layers photograph better than bulky coats,  think lightweight warmth instead.

Don’t overthink it. The goal is to feel like you, just a slightly more put-together version.

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, your outfit is just one piece of the story. What really matters are the moments, the laughter and the quiet glances. My goal is for you to always feel comfortable and confidently you!
