Why You Should Include Your Dog in Your Photo Session (Northern Virginia)

Our pets are our besties and are a part of our family. They are there for life’s biggest milestones, the quiet moments at home and everything in between. They greet us at the door after a long day, make us belly laugh when we need it most and somehow become such a big part of our lives that it is hard to imagine life without them.
So why wouldn’t they be part of your photos?
As a pet owner myself (a proud Boxer mama!), I know just how quickly they grow and change. Looking back at puppy photos of my own dog always brings a smile to my face, now that she’s older, I find myself wanting updated photos because our lives have changed together. She’s grown, our family has grown and I never want to forget this chapter of our story.
That’s exactly why I encourage my clients to include their dogs whenever they can.
They are a Part of Every Milestones
Your dog has probably been there through some of the biggest moments in your life, so let them be part of the memories you preserve.
Whether you’re celebrating:
- A new puppy
- An engagement
- A couples session
- An elopement
- A maternity session
- Family photos
- Your dog’s birthday
- Or simply another year together
…your dog belongs in those memories just as much as anyone else.
One day, you will look back and remember how they sat beside you during your engagement, rested their head on your growing baby bump or happily ran through the field while your family laughed together.
Those little moments become priceless.

Our Time With Our Pet is Valuable
If there is one thing every pet owner understands, it is that time goes by far too quickly.
One minute they’re tiny puppies learning how to walk on a leash and before you know it, they have got little white hairs around their face. If your dog is getting older, I encourage you to include them in a photo session. You will look back and be grateful you included their sweet loyal faces in your session.
The Best Photos Happen When Your Pet is Being Themselves
One thing I always tell my clients is this:
Your dog doesn’t need to be perfect. They’re probably going to sniff every flower, chase a squirrel, roll in the grass or even get the zoomies. And honestly…why not let them? That is who they are!!
As a lifestyle photographer, my goal is to create a balance between beautifully guided poses and authentic candid moments. We will absolutely capture those classic photos where everyone is smiling at the camera, but some of my favorite images happen in between.
The way your dog looks up at you, the excitement when you throw their favorite toy, the kisses, the tail wags, the cuddles and even the jumps!
Those genuine moments tell your story far better than a perfectly posed photo ever could.

A Little Preparation Goes a Long Way!
The more comfortable your dog is, the more relaxed everyone will feel.
I always recommend bringing:
- Plenty of water and a portable bowl
- Favorite treats
- A toy they love
- Waste bags
- A towel if they have been playing
We will also pay attention to the weather to make sure your pup stays comfortable. If it is too hot or too cold for them, we will find a day and time that works best.
When it comes to collars, harnesses and leashes, safety always comes first. We can create beautiful images while keeping them safe! Plus this is the time to include your dogs cute new collar, bandana or bow tie; the options are endless.
Location, Location, Location…
One of the questions I get asked most is, “Where should we have our session?”
My answer? Somewhere your dog can relax and have fun!
One of my favorite locations for dog sessions is a beautiful open field. Wide open spaces give your pup room to run, explore, sniff and simply enjoy being outside. They also provide gorgeous natural scenery.
If your dog is a little nervous around other dogs or people, an open field is often the perfect choice, it gives plenty of space to spread out. Your pup can feel more comfortable without the distractions of busy locations.
Of course, every dog is different! Some families love having photos taken in their own backyard. Others may choose a favorite beach, hiking trail or another meaningful location where they love spending time together. No matter where we go, my goal is to choose a location where your dog feels comfortable and feels their best!
