5 Tips for a Stress-Free Maternity Session (NOVA Edition)

Pregnancy comes with enough to think about, appointments and baby prep, so your maternity photos should not be another thing to stress over. My goal as your photographer is to make the experience feel calm, simple, and actually enjoyable.
Here are 5 easy tips to help you feel fully prepared and relaxed for your maternity session here in Northern Virginia:
Tip 1: Schedule Your Session at the Right Time (24–34 Weeks)
One of the biggest keys to a relaxed maternity session is timing. Booking around 24–34 weeks gives you the perfect balance: your bump is beautifully showing (because yes, it is all about the belly!) but you’re still comfortable enough to move, walk, and enjoy the moment.
Planning ahead also gives you time to:
• choose outfits without rushing
• pick your favorite photos before newborn-life takes over
• truly enjoy the experience instead of feeling “last-minute”
Most mamas are surprised how fast that third trimester flies.
Booking early = peace of mind + a stress-free countdown to baby.
Tip 2: Choose a Location That Feels Peaceful (I’ve Got Plenty of NOVA Favorites!)
The location sets the mood, and a natural setting makes everything feel easier. Most of my maternity sessions take place in beautiful outdoor spots across Loudoun and Fairfax County, open fields, tree-lined trails, garden paths, sunset spots with soft golden light, and even a few quaint small-town corners.
And the best part?
Most of my go-to locations are free to use; no permits, no paperwork, no surprise fees. Just you, your bump, and a pretty backdrop.Want a wide open field or flower garden? A quiet trail surrounded by tall trees? Or maybe a charming little town with cobblestone and cute brick homes? I already have a curated list of local, low-stress options ready for you, but if you have a specific location in mind, feel free to tell me!

Tip 3: Wear Something Comfortable, Flowy & Bump-Flattering
When it comes to maternity photos, comfort is everything! Flowy, soft fabrics photograph beautifully and drape naturally over your baby bump. Think long dresses, neutrals, light textures, or earth-toned pieces that feel soft, feminine, and easy to move in.
Flowy outfits highlight the belly in the most natural and flattering way, especially during gentle walking and swaying poses.
Not sure what to wear? Don’t worry, every client receives a style guide with outfit ideas, color palettes, and real examples so nothing feels last-minute or stressful.

Tip 4: Pack Light, You Don’t Need Much
You don’t need to bring a big bag of things to your session.
A bottle of water, comfy shoes for walking between locations, and maybe a simple touch-up item like lip balm; that’s really all you need.
If you do want to bring something meaningful, like a sonogram photo, tiny onesie, or baby book, feel free, but there’s zero pressure.
Your bump, your glow, and the moment you’re in are already the focus. Remember: it’s all about you and this beautiful season you’re in!
Tip 5: Don’t Worry About Posing, I’ve Got You!
You don’t need to practice poses or know what to do with your hands, that’s my job.
I gently guide you through natural, bump-flattering poses and prompts so you feel relaxed and confident the entire time.
Before your session, I also send a simple prep + posing guide so you already know what to expect.
All you have to do is show up and enjoy this chapter. I’ll take care of the rest!
